THE STORY
A kitchen island wants to look permanent. The usual way to get that is concrete, and concrete brings a crane, a reinforced floor and a fixed position for the rest of the building's life.
The Fold Island reads as a single folded slab of concrete, lifted off the floor by one crease, its underside falling into shadow. It weighs 155 kilograms — roughly a fifth of the cast version — and the 900 mm cantilever on the seating side has no visible support because the shell itself is the support. The concrete effect is a mineral coat with cast-form mottling, sealed on top so it takes a kitchen.
It ships in two crated sections and can be moved by four people. Mass, without the mass.
